Obituary of Stanley Markey

STANLEY "SKI" MARKEY Stanley "Ski" Markey was born in Chicago Illinois on December 28th, 1920. He was one of eight children born to Stanley and Josephine Muszynski. He loved music, Lawrence Welk being one of his favorites. He was fortunate enough to actually meet Lawrence Welk with his family as a young man. In February 1942, he volunteered for the Marine Corps and served from Guadalcanal through Bougainville. Stanley returned to the states to Mojave, CA Marine Corps Air Base as the facilities manager. He then joined NACA in 1952 at Edwards Air Force Base. While working there he was Santa Clause for the many schoolchildren that would visit the base. This brought him great joy and was something that he enjoyed. One of his proudest accomplishments was finding a path for the shuttle which is now called Challenger Way. He retired from NASA in 1980. Stanley was part of the "Golden Age of Aviation" during this period. Even after his retirement, he continued to work hard and stay involved. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 1625 in Lancaster and made many visits to NASA for shuttle landings, meetings and many other events that took place. He enjoyed his retirement at his house in the high desert town of Lancaster, CA. He is survived by his son, Charles, and grandson, Eric, who loved him very much.
