Obituary of Edward Melville Birtcil

Edd peacefully passed away at home, surrounded by family, on July 19, 2021. He was born and raised in Chico and was proud of his deep roots in the community as a fifth generation Chicoan. Edd graduated from Chico Senior High School (Class of 1963). Upon graduation, he served in the United States Airforce, following in his father's footsteps as an intelligence officer. Returning to Chico, he graduated from Chico State and married the love of his life, Susan. His happiest times were with his family. He loved the outdoors and could often be found fishing in Butte Meadows, observing wildlife at Llano Seco, and enjoying the ocean in Fort Bragg. Edd became a respected historian of "old Chico" and was known by many as "Chico Vecino". Edd was preceded in death by his parents Edward Birtcil Sr. and Lorraine (Hoyer) Birtcil as well as his younger brother, Steven. He is survived by his older brother, Charles Birtcil of Chico. Edd's legacy lives on through his wife of 40 years, Susan (Sutthoff) Birtcil, his four children (Brian, Loran, Ian and MarieAnna), his 16 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Vigil services will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Chico on Friday July 30th from 6-8:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Chico on Saturday July 31st at 11 am, followed by burial at Chico Cemetery.
