Obituary of Duncan Albert McCowan

DUNCAN ALBERT MCCOWAN Duncan Albert McCowan, 86, died September 10, 2021. Duncan was born February 24, 1935, in Oroville CA, to John and Lottie McCowan. Duncan spent his early childhood in Meadow Valley. His family moved to Chico and Duncan attended Oakdale Normal School, Chico High School, and Chico State University. Duncan went on to Stanford University where he earned a Masters in Civil Engineering. He began his engineering career at Teichert in Woodland. He moved back to Chico and entered into a land leveling business, McCowan and Son, with his father and later his brother John McCowan II. He finished his career as an engineer for both Del Norte County and Cal Trans. Duncan married his wife of 59 years, Christine Carol McCowan, in 1962. They first met when they were in the same 3rd/4th grade class at Oakdale Normal School. The McCowans made Chico their permanent home where they raised their two children John McCowan III and Mary McCowan Thompson. Duncan always loved sports and the outdoors. As a child he fished in Bidwell Park. Duncan was on the boxing team at Chico State and he was later recognized as a Hall of Fame Member. As an adult, Duncan enjoyed watching and volunteering for his own children's youth sport organizations. Duncan was an avid skier who enjoyed skiing with friends and family into his eighties. Duncan is survived by his wife Carol McCowan, children John McCowan & Mary McCowan Thompson, grandchildren Christine McCowan, Hailey Thompson, Samantha Thompson and brother John McCowan II. A service will be planned at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Brusie Funeral Home.
