Obituary of Bud Hoobler JR

Harold Wallace (Bud) Hoobler Jr. was born in

Willows, California on September 16, 1929 to Harold

and Hazel (Halterman) Hoobler. He died on

November 14, 2022 at the age of 93 in Chico.

Bud attended Willows schools and at age 12 moved

to Chico in 1941 and graduated from Chico High

School in 1947, where he was active in Block “C” and

Basketball and had some courses at Chico State.

He enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed in

Barbers Point, Hawaii from 1948 to 1952. His last

assignment was on board ship to Japan before

getting discharged.

On leave from Hawaii, Bud met Marilyn Frances

Moody who moved with her parents next door to

Bud’s parents on East Sacramento Avenue. Bud

corresponded with Marilyn and he married the girl

next door on April 25, 1953 in Reno, Nevada.

Their son William (Bill) was born in 1953 and their

twin daughters, Janet and Janice were born in 1955.

They lived in their home on Wayne Lane for 61

years.

He worked for Hoobler & Schroeder Insurance

before working with his Dad at Hoobler Warehouse

on W. 8th Avenue. He then worked for Tri-Co and

Tenneco West as a Field Representative supporting

the nut industry. He retired in 1984.

He became a Master Mason of Chico-Leland

Stanford Masonic Lodge No.111 in 1953. He was a

lifetime member of Josephine Chico Chapter No. 104,

Order of Eastern Star. Bud and Marilyn served as

Worthy Patron and Worthy Matron in 1965.

Bud and Marilyn traveled to all 50 states. They

celebrated their 64 year anniversary in April 2017.

Marilyn died on June 15, 2017.

He will be remembered for his stories, his cooking

fried potatoes and onions in Philbrook, quotes,

taking pictures of barns and leaves on their trips to

the 50 states. Bud enjoyed playing golf and going to

Bing Crosby ProAm Golf Tournament for many years

with his son and brother-in-law Jack Moody.

Our family weekend rides had surprise destinations

traveling anywhere from 1 to 3 hours. Family

vacations were spent in Philbrook, Trinidad, Boise,

Idaho and the Oregon Coast.

His favorite quotes were “It’ll feel better when it

quits hurting”, “Wait and see and you’ll know more

about it”, “Faster than a herd of turtles and a cloud

of heifer dust” and “Take your time going and hurry

back”.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife,

Marilyn, two sisters, Jeanne Rice and Claire Hoobler

and son-in-law, Andrew Bertagna. He is survived by

son, Bill (Marilyn) and daughters, Janet Bertagna

and Ja’nice Hoobler; four grandchildren, Theresa

Schneider (TJ), Lauren Sai (Michael), Clayton

Hoobler (Jaclyn) and Jenny Holtermann (Tim); seven

great grandchildren, Emma Schneider, Holly

Schneider, Henry Holtermann, Hazel Holtermann,

William Sai, Edward Sai and Raef Hoobler. And

nieces, Lynn and Margie Rice and Carolyn Yelick

and nephew Thomas Moody.

Gravesite services will be held at Chico Cemetery

on Thursday, December 1st at 11:00 am conducted

by Chico-Leland Stanford Masonic Lodge No.111.

A gift in his memory may be made to Shriners

Hospital in Sacramento or a charity of your choice

through Brusie Funeral Home. The family also wishes

their loving care of Bud.
