Obituary of Kathleen Gould

Kathleen (Kate) Mary Gould of Chico, CA passed away on 12/13/2022 after a lengthy illness.

Born 7/24/1962 in Cooperstown, NY, she is survived by her husband Kent Loeffler and pooch Buster of Chico, CA, her parents James and Eleanor (Knopf) Gould of Canandaigua, NY, her siblings Dolores Gould (David Greenseid) of Foster City, CA, James Gould 111 (Wendy) of Corning, NY, Mark Gould (Carol) of Baltimore, MD, Jeanne Oag (Alistair) of Gerry, NY and Sally Coupal (Robert) of Apollo Beach, FL, along with numerous nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.

Kate graduated from Maple Grove High School in Bemus Point, NY where she enjoyed playing the flute in concert and marching bands as well as various clubs and extracurricular activities including as a 4H member where she learned sewing, cooking, raised lambs and so much more. Her high school year spent in Tucson, Arizona released her creative spirit which continued throughout her life through sewing trendsetting outfits as well as baking, music and more. She had a special talent for turning anything into a unique and beautiful “objet de art”.

Kate went to college at Buffalo State University and received a bachelor’s degree in Nutritional Sciences. She later worked at restaurants in Buffalo, Syracuse and Ithaca, New York. In Ithaca she was a sous chef at Turbacks, Tre Stelle and Pangea, a pastry chef at Rene’s Bistro and Patisserie, and finally an executive chef at Telluride House. She was generous with her legendary pastry skills, creating stunning and elegant birthday cakes for family and friends over the years.

She met her husband Kent while they both worked at Pangea, Kate in the hot kitchen and Kent as a relief bartender who brought her large cold glasses of ice tea. They married in their living room on Y2K and immediately hopped on a plane for Miami. Though she hated airplane travel K & K made numerous trips to California, the Midwest and Italy as well as yearly winter pilgrimages to the Florida Keys and summer vacations to cottages on many of New York’s Finger Lakes.

In 2013 K & K made the big move from upstate New York to Northern California, settling in Chico. Kate loved being in a place with no snow and where fruit trees and flowers grow all year long. She oversaw several large renovation projects in the new house including a completely redesigned kitchen where she plied her culinary skills.

Since childhood Kate was an avid reader. She didn’t care much about money but felt like “a wealthy woman” when she had a stack of unread books on the shelf that had been gleaned from library book sales, yard sales or the little free libraries found around Chico.

Her family will miss laughing as we read her “Filbert Avenue Tattler” newsletters and her wickedly clever puns on cards and letters. She also shared her creative spirit through beautiful needlework projects, a variety of epicurean delights and beautiful gardens, especially her favorite roses.

Any donations in Kates name could be made to your local library, animal shelter or food bank, all charities she believed in and supported. Also, a charity called A Living Tribute (alivingtribute.org) which replants trees in areas decimated by wildfires would be near and dear to her heart
