Obituary of James Merton Stephens

James M. Stephens died on July 5, 2023 at the age of 77. Survived by his wife Giovanna (with whom he just celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary), his children Julia and Justin, as well as his closest brother Paul and his wife Rosemarie, and brother Dale. Born at Enloe Hospital to Margaret (Hoffman) and William Stephens on May 3, 1946. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother William Jr. Stephens, and sister Carol Pyle. He was raised in the community of Durham-Dayton and developed some life long friends that he now leaves behind. He attended Durham schools and graduated from Durham High School in 1964. After graduation he served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. On June 13, 1971 he married his sweetheart Gio. He worked at several jobs before finding his passion for teaching. He went to Chico State to get his teaching credential and then found a home at Los Molinos Elementary in the 2nd and 3rd grades for 20 years. We will always remember his thirst for knowledge and desire to share it with any and all who would listen. As per Jim’s wishes, there is no service and he will be laid to rest at Glen Oaks Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Durham Volunteer Fire Dept at: P.O.
