Obituary of Judith Dianne Roberts

It is with sad, but love-filled hearts, that the family of Judith Diane Hegarty Roberts announces her passing on Thursday July 6 at her home in Chico. Judy was born in Kirksville, MO on June 9, 1939 to Emmett and Naomi Hegarty. Her brother James arrived a few years later and soon the family packed up and moved to California. They settled in Fresno where Judy graduated from Fresno High School and then Fresno State with a Bachelors degree in Education. She began teaching elementary school in Fresno, where she caught the eye of a student teacher named Arthur James (Jim) Roberts. After rebuffing his efforts for a date at first, she luckily made the decision to accept his advances which resulted in a fruitful and happy marriage that lasted over 58 years. They moved from Fresno to Pebble Beach where they welcomed their first child, Jeffrey. Jim was encouraged by many to pursue his Doctorate, so the couple moved again, this time to Corvallis, OR. While he was attending Oregon State, the couple welcomed their second child, Jana. With a degree in hand and two children in tow, they moved to Chico in 1970. Judy soon settled in with lots of community involvement including Children’s Home Society. Once the children were of an age they could fend for themselves after school hours, Judy returned to the workforce. Her first adventure back was working for ALCI, which involved teaching English (as a second language) to wives of students attending Chico State. She then ventured into the public schools as a substitute teacher. One of her stints as a sub involved filling in for the Health Aide at Bidwell Jr High. This would prove to be the start of her career as a Health Aide. She acquired the necessary training and certification and was employed at both Bidwell and Pleasant Valley High Schools, until retiring from Bidwell in this same position. After retirement Judy was able to dive headfirst into her creative passion of quilting, as well as continuing her philanthropic endeavors. She was a member of several quilt guilds including the Annie Star Guild where she created many beautiful quilts for family and friends. She also took an active member role in the Chico Chapter of PEO. She enjoyed participation in several book clubs as well as gatherings with good friends from the fantasy football gang, her Fresno High group, Gourmet Group…the list goes on of all her dear pals. From early on Judy was a fan of the arts. She and Jim attended plays from Ashland to San Francisco, New York to London, as well as art exhibits wherever they were displayed. The couple were also were bitten by the travel bug and enjoyed touring Europe, Australia and Asia. Judy was preceded in death by her parents, brother and husband, Jim. Surviving her are her son Jeff (Katie), her daughter Jana, and her beloved grandchildren Trevor and Olivia. There will be a celebration of Judy’s life on Sept 7th at Canyon Oaks CC. Please contact the family for information. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to one of her many passions and organizations, Children’s Home Society, PEO, or Enloe Cancer Center.
