Obituary of Sam Puritz

A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 10 a.m. at the Chico Masonic Family Center on East Ave. for Samuel "Sam" Puritz. Sam passed away Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the age of 89. Sam was born May 7, 1920 here in Chico to Barnett and Tillie Puritz. He graduated Chico High School. Sam married Ruth, and they were divorced in 1969 and he married Pat in 1969. Pat preceded in death. Sam was co-owner of Puritz Oil Company, and he also owned Puritz Market in Hamilton City, then Sam worked as a distributor of USA Today in the Chico, Paradise area. Sam was a life member of both the Eagles and Elks Lodge, a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge and was Secretary of the Leland Stanford Lodge for 25 years. Sam just recently received his 50 year pin, and was also 32nd Degree Mason Scottish Rite. Sam loved bowling and was in the Chico Bowling Associations Hall of Fame. In his younger days he was in films that were filmed here in Chico. He was one of Robin Hoods Merry Men. He was also in the film Stand Up and Fight, and shot Noah Berry in the back. He was also in The Great Waltz, all filmed in Chico. Sam is survived by two daughters, Joanne and Elaine Puritz, both of Chico; a son, Tracy Puritz (Reissa) of Richmond, VA and two granddaughters, Alisha and Debbie. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in Sam's name may do so to the Alzheimer's Association in care of the Brusie Funeral Home.
