Obituary of Richard Meyer

RICHARD JOSEPH MEYER A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, Dec. 3, 2010 at St. John The Baptist Church, for Richard J. Meyer, 91, of Chico, CA. Richard (Dick) Joseph Meyer was born September 14, 1919 in Reinfeld (Holstein), Germany to Berthold and Gertrud Meyer. At the age of 17, he immigrated to Brazil, where he worked on a coffee plantation for seven years and learned to speak Portuguese. Dick then came to the United States, where he settled in the San Francisco Bay Area, learned English and became a U.S. Citizen. Dick married Geraldine (Jean) Ashley at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Palo Alto, CA on August 19, 1950. Dick worked in the Maintenance Department at Stanford University for 30 years. He was well known for his carpentry skills, craftsmanship, his ability to fix anything, and above all, his garden. During his retirement years in Chico, he received countless notes of appreciation for his beautiful flowers and front yard. Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years; his four children and their spouses, William and Cathy Meyer, Christopher Meyer and Vonda Derryberry, Nancy and Tim Coad, Trudy and Steve Hooper; grandchildren, Julie Stewart, Tracy Coad, Douglas Bruchs, Robin Meyer; and great- granchildren, Hayden, Kyra and Isla. He is also survived by his brother, Horst Trave. A Viewing will be held from 5-7 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010 at Brusie Funeral Home.
