Obituary of Lowell Stringfellow

Lowell A. Stringfellow passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by loved ones, on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at the age of 97. Lowell was born Oct. 31, 1914, in Chico, CA, the oldest of 6 children born to Austin Stringfellow and Gladys Ganow. He was born at the original Enloe Hospital and was actually delivered by Dr. Enloe. Lowell was married to Clara Fay Slack on Dec. 14, 1938, in Reno, NV. Lowell is survived by his wife of almost 73 years, Clara Stringfellow of Durham; his son, Lowell Alan Stringfellow of Quincy; his daughter, Diane Barbara of Durham; 5 grandchildren, Lisa Davis (Donnie) of Quincy, Michele Warren (Martin) of Bangor, Casey Stringfellow, Suzan Hickman of Chico, and Sabrina Barbara of Durham; 17 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Claude Stringfellow (Barbara) of Oroville, CA, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by siblings, Thelma Grace Best, Samuel Stewart, Ward B. and Wendell D. Stringfellow. When Lowell and Clara were first married, they lived for a short time in Nome, Alaska, where Lowell worked on a gold dredge. During WWII, he worked in the Shipyards in Brisbane, CA. He later worked for Meadow Valley Lumber Company in Meadow Valley, CA as a heavy equipment mechanic. In 1955, Lowell and Clara purchased their home in Durham. Lowell retired from the State of California Department of Water Resources. He enjoyed planting a huge garden on their 10 acres in Durham, sharing fruits of his labor with his many friends and family. Lowell enjoyed traveling with the Good Sam's Club in Durham. He was a charter member of the group. Services will be held at the L.D.S. Church on W. East Ave. at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, where Lowell and Clara are long standing members.
