Obituary of Hugh Noland

John Hugh Noland, 87, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 6, 2012. Born in Greenville, Texas, Hugh served in the US Navy from 1942 to 1946 for the duration of World War II, as a Radioman. He graduated from Reed College in Portland, Oregon in 1951 with a B.A. and eventually earned a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics at Montana State in Bozeman, Montana in 1958. Beginning in 1959 he moved to Chico and taught Mathematics at Chico State University until his retirement in 1987. He was an avid chess player, achieving the title of National Master in 1988 from the US Chess Federation. In 1980, he was second place in the Grand National postal chess tournament and placed first in 1982. He is survived by his two sons, Gary Noland and wife Kaori of Portland, Oregon, and Robert Noland and wife Leslie Ann Holden, and grandson, Benjamin Noland of Princeton, New Jersey; and two sisters, Jet Montgomery of Fairfax, Virginia and Carol Demong of San Diego, and nieces and nephews. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 11, 2012 at the Chico Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CSUC Mathematics General Scholarship Account and sent to Dept. of Mathematics and Statistics, CSUC, Chico, CA 95929-0525.
