Obituary of Gretchen Houghton

Gretchin Grace (GG) Houghton, the first child of William Ross and Margery Doerr Houghton, was born May 17, 1945. She passed to her heavenly home Aug. 1, 2012. Gretchin was a tower of strength and courage pushing through several maladys from her early childhood until her heart stopped Aug. 1, 2012. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Chico Lions Breakfast Club, Butte Council of the Blind, Passages, New Outlook for the Blind Group, and the Bottle Club. Gretchin was not "just a member" she was very active in all of these when her health allowed. Her favorites were a Salvation Army Bell Ringer, Lions White Cane and Lions Community activities. Her Houghton great-grandfathers family settled in Chico from New York in 1888. Her grandfather was a Charter Member of Chico Host Lions Club and her father a Charter Member of the Chico Lions Breakfast Club. She loved her Aunt Ruthie Doerr that is in a care facility in Chico. She visited her several times a week and they attended the First Christian Church together. Gretchin is survived by Aunt Ruthie; sisters, Lynn (Al), Mary (Pat), Susan (Gary), and brother David (Kat); Aunt Evelyn Houghton and Uncle Tommy Bailey and numerous 1st and 2nd cousins. Special thanks to her conservator, Steve Thompson for his taking care of her affairs and her for more than 20 years. Memorial Services will be at Glenn Oaks Memorial Cemetery Chapel at 10:00 a.m. on Aug. 10, 2012. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Gretchin Houghton to First Christian Church, Chico Breakfast Lions Scholarship or a charity of your choice, in care of the Brusie Funeral Home, 626 Broadway, Chico, CA 95926.
