Obituary of Grace Caroline Hertlein

In loving memory of Grace C. Hertlein, 91, of Chico, CA who passed away July 13, 2015. Born in Chicago on April 5, 1924, Grace had an early Catholic upbring-ing with an emphasis on excellence, discipline, classical musical instruc-tion, singing, drama and spirituality. High school interests included jour-nalism and Eastern and Western philosophy. She married Carl Hertlein and had two children, Michael and Patricia. After Carl passed in 1957, the young widow attended and graduated with honors from a teacher's college in Wisconsin in 1960. During her six years of teaching Art as an Art Supervisor for students K-12, Grace attended the Art Institute of Chicago on Saturdays and summers from 1960-1965 as a Graduate Student at-Large in Art Education, Printmaking and Sculp-ture. She then became a freelance painter at the Gilman Galleries in Chicago, from 1965-1968 before returning to school to qualify for teaching at the college/university level. In June of 1970, Grace earned her undergrad-uate degree with honors in Art and Sculpture, as well as a graduate degree, again with honors, in Computer Art from CA State University, Chico. Grace authored over 100 publications in national and interna-tional computer period-icals form 1970 through 1988. Upon retirement in June of 1998, Grace decided to begin a new chapter in her life, writing philo-sophical poetry, musical lyrics, and in 2004, at the age of 80, began composing music with the aid of a computer and related systems. She said, "To be able to do this daily is pleasurable and inspiring. It has been fruitful, meaningful and renewing." Grace is survived by daughter Patricia Wilson (Donald) of Franklin, NC and granddaughter Laura Jordan of Sanford, FL. An informal memorial and celebration of Grace's life is scheduled for Sunday, July 26, 1:00 pm at Brusie Funeral Home, 626 Broadway, in Chico.
