Obituary of James Francis Lindsey

James F. (Jim) LINDSEY, Ed.D Jim Lindsey, Chico State Emeritus Professor of Education, was born Feb. 28, 1923, in San Francisco, and died at home on March. 26, 2009, in Chico. "Got a minute? Have I told you the one aboutŠ?" And then came Jim's latest joke. If you had a minute, he'd have you laughing. He'd figured out, by the end of his life, that the reason he was still here was to bring joy into other people's lives. His heart was as huge as his reservoir of jokes. He was a family man, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was happiest when surrounded by those he loved. Jim leaves behind his sister Bernice and her husband Amil; his children Carleen and her husband Gerry, Barbara and her husband Joe, Margaret, Patricia, and Terry; grandchildren Bridget, Corinne, Chris, Tim, Desiree, Steven, and Terrence Jr.; and great-grandchildren Anthony and Jerry. He also leaves behind 6 nieces, a nephew, numerous dear friends, and thousands of valued colleagues and former students. His beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Pennie Lindsey, died in 2005. Jim was a highly regarded professor, administrator, principal, colleague, mentor and advisor. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at San.Francisco. State University. The Lindsey family moved to Chico in 1966, after he received his doctorate from U.C. Berkeley. His long and distinguished career culminated in 23 years on the faculty of CSU, Chico. He held leadership positions in many organizations, including 10 years of service on the Butte County Board of Education. Jim had an uncommon gift for enjoying the life that he lived, and shared that delight with others. His deep faith gave him daily comfort and joy. Jim was a gifted writer, known for his books, professional articles, and articulate letters. He was an avid reader, a music lover who enjoyed Sousa marches and classical music, and a passionate fan of the S.F. Giants, the S.F. 49rs, and the Chico State Wildcats. Jim and Pennie were world travelers, who treasured the memories of countless cruises, as well as the friendships they made during his exchange professorships in Ireland and New Zealand. And he loved a dry martini. Memorial Service: The funeral mass will be held on April 26, 2009, at 2 p.m., at Our Divine Savior Catholic Church, 566 E. Lassen Ave., Chico.
