Obituary of Herbert John Schaefer

HERB SCHAEFER A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Herbert John Schaefer, 96 of Chico, on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Our Divine Savior Catholic Church. Herb passed away on Friday, October 16, 2009 in Chico. He was born July 26, 1913 to Victor and Evelyn Schaefer in Alameda. Herb graduated from Alameda High School and U.C. Berkeley and received his pharmacology degree from U.C. San Francisco. In 1944 he married Laurie Boyd of Alameda. He bought his father's pharmacy in Alameda and years later moved on to work in several hospitals, before retiring after 46 years as a pharmacist. Herb loved sailing and was a member of the Aeolian and Encinal Yacht Clubs. He always knew the price of oil, and enjoyed technology and computers. He had life long passion for music and played the piano for services at St. John's Catholic Church for over twenty years. Herb was a member of Our Divine Savior Catholic Church, the 3rd Order of St. Francis and Knights of Columbus. His survivors include his daughter Marcie Carras of Chico; granddaughter, Liberty Carras of New York and grandson Patrick Carras of Chico. He was preceeded in death by his wife Laurie in 1980. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m and Vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening at Bidwell Chapel. Donations may be made to the Abbey of New Clairvaux Sacred Stones in care of the funeral home.
