Most teachers who were privileged enough to have Roger as their principal considered him to be the best principal they ever had and I include myself in that group. He was a hands on principal and spent a lot of time in our classrooms. I remember him often coming to my 1/2 combo bilingual classroom during our reading hour to watch the children learn how to read. There were always at least 8 reading groups going, some in English and others in Spanish, and all students were practicing their skills. The noise level was loud and everyone was on task. He loved to watch them enthusiastically becoming stronger readers and commented about it. He told me that he had a high noise tolerance (good thing) and was always impressed by the amount of learning going on. He made me feel like I was the most successful reading teacher in the world, he made other teachers feel that way also. He was such a positive, gifted leader who brought out the best in everyone he worked with.
Aside from the honor of working with him, I was fortunate enough to become close friends with Suzanne and Roger. It was such a pleasure to be with them, the love they shared flowed so freely between the two of them and spilled out onto their friends. I always felt so fortunate to be friends with them, I will treasure the time we spent together all my life. They are both such exceptional human beings, they were a perfect match.

We are sadden to hear about the passing of Rodger Steel. As parents of two children, Gavin ansd Zachary children under his care in the early 1910’s at McManus School. We knew Rodger when he was the Principal there. My husband was on the School Site Council and noted how professional and kind he was. My interaction with Rodger was as a Mom, he was a gentle giant, professional and kind. Blessings to your family, and may God welcome him with open arms and hold you in His arms.

Suzanne, Barbara and Zack - so very sorry to hear about Roger's passing. I won't be able to attend the his Celebration of Life on the 22nd, as I will be in the Bay Area assisting my family getting my mother into a new care facility. I did want to say a few words about Roger. He and I had similar experiences at the start of our educational careers (i.e., we were both graduated from the UC system and both served as Principal @ Forest Ranch Elementary School). As Roger's Teacher-In-Charge at McManus, I wanted to point out his very professional administrative approach. He was extremely approachable by staff, students and parents. He always remembered he had been a teacher once and never fell into that dreaded - sort of zombie administrative approach - of "I'm doing what the District directs me to do come hell or high water - take it or leave it!" He treated his administrative assistants as true team members. He was good in delegation, as he recognized that good ideas and good energy can come from a number of sources outside of the Principal's Office.
